Anna Reimann is a native of the Saar, with graduate degrees in enology and viticulture from the University of Montpellier, and work experience that includes winemaking at Viña Santa Rita in Chile, Maison Joseph Drouhin in Beaune, and Greenough Vineyard in New Zealand. She met her husband, Stephan, at Weingut Markus Molitor, where she served as Director of International Sales, and he as Chief Vineyard Manager. Their estate is centered on the eighteenth-century Cantzheim Manor at the foot of the Kanzemer Altenberg, which Anna and Stephan have transformed into a beautiful small hotel. Attached to the manor are old vines in the Altenberg, in the Saarburger Fuchs, and vines in the Kanzemer Sonnenberg, to which they have added the vineyards of our old friend, Peter Reinert, who has retired.

Viticulture in Germany is mentioned by the Stoic philosopher Posidonius of Rhodes (135-51 BC), who wrote, "...the (Germans) drink a lot of undiluted wine..." It's known that the Romans first planted many of Germany's finest vineyard sites. With the rise of the early Christian church, the vine had been intimately intertwined with religious and secular history. By the late 18th century, it was the Church which was responsible for quality controls such as laws against the adulteration of wines, replacement of lesser-known varietals with the noble Riesling grape, and the custom of distinguishing certain vineyard sites as being superior. Long before the first growths in Bordeaux were established, the Saar had already set the benchmark in terms of quality for racy, elegantly fruity Rieslings. At the end of the 1800s, Rieslings from reputable estates in the Saar were the most sought after and expensive wines in the world.

Riesling is a white grape that originated in the Rhine region of Germany. This vine is noted for the hardness of its wood, which makes it particularly cold resistant and well-suited to cool climate growing regions. Two notable attributes of the variety are its high level of acidity, and ability to reflect the soil of the vineyard, resulting in a mineral complexity. High quality Riesling wines can be produced in varying styles, ranging from dry (trocken), to half-dry (halbtrocken, or more recently, “feinherb”), as well as all levels of sweetness. Known for being very aromatic, Riesling wines can age well and their flavors will evolve overtime.

This wine, while perfectly at home with Asian preparations and sushi also pairs seamlessly with veal and pork roasts. This is a classic, "big" white wine with lots of versatility.
