Eugenio Rivella, Gianni Doglia’s maternal grandfather, was a sharecropper in 1947 when he purchased a four-hectare farm in Castagnole delle Lanze. His ambition was to vinify grapes that he grew on his own land. Now representing the third generation at the estate, Gianni Doglia is one of the leading growers in the region of Monferrato, especially celebrated for his Tre Bicchieri-awarded Moscato d’Asti, which is often called the finest wine of its kind in the region. The organically farmed vineyards, which lie on calcareous soil at an elevation of 320-360 meters, are among the highest in Asti. They include five hectares of Moscato Bianco, with the other five divided among smaller parcels of Barbera, Nebbiolo, Grignolino, and Ruché. Gianni Doglia is an active member of The Green Experience, which assists winegrowers in implementing sustainable practices in viticulture. In 2021, Gianni was awarded "Viticoltore dell'Anno" ("Winegrower of the Year") by Gambero Rosso, Italy's prestigious food and wine bible.
The wines of Piemonte are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piemonte was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piemontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine - most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a French woman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour - later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy - this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. Many of the DOC designated Asti are contiguous or overlap those of Alba - one such example is Moscato d'Asti, a traditional, sweet, frizzante wine produced from various clones of the Muscat grape. The wine, generally produced in small amounts, is a delicious pairing to the milder hams and fresh fruits of the region.
The Muscat family of grapes includes nearly two hundred varieties. Many ampelographers, botanists with a specialty in identifying and classifying grape vines, believe that Muscat grapes are the oldest domesticated varieties of the Vitis vinifera species. In general Muscat wines are highly aromatic, with notes of ripe fruit, flowers, and spice. Depending on the variety, region, and winemaking technique, Muscat grapes can be used to produce many different wine styles, including dry, sweet, sparkling, and even dark fortified wines.
Delicious, sweet “frizzante” wines go well with Proscuitto and Melon, brunch, or by themselves after dinner.
