This Barbera comes from a single acre of loose, sandy soil located just above and to the west of the family home, on one of the most prestigious hills in Monforte. In the glass, the wine has a deep purple color, with flashes of ruby near the edge. The nose opens with black cherries, ripe damson plums, cassis, and exotic spices. On the palate, the black fruit flavors are beautifully integrated with the spicy aromas and fine-grained tannins that come from a mix of new and one-year old French barriques. This is a wine of great finesse and power, with the capacity to age well over a fifteen-year period in a good cellar.
About this wine producer: If there is any Barolo producer who perfectly embodies the idea of stewardship of his heritage, it is Elio Grasso. He was working in a bank in Torino in 1978 when his grandfather died, leaving him a small cascina and a few giornate of vines on the Gavarini and Ginestra hills of Monforte d’Alba. Elio promptly quit the bank to become a wine grower. Today he still works every day in the vineyard, preferring to leave the cellar and business to his son Gianluca, who produces the wines. The estate is now always counted among the top producers in Italy.
