This is hand-harvested Nebbiolo from twenty-year-old vines, which is fermented and aged exclusively in stainless steel tanks, in order to showcase a pure expression of the fruit. If you can, use a large Burgundy glass, as Nebbiolo's perfume can be as nuanced and multifaceted as fine Pinot Noir. Gavarini, especially, is a vineyard that produces Nebbiolo with absolutely gorgeous aromatics.
In the glass, the wine is a limpid crimson, with rose-red flashes towards the edge. Black cherries, dried rose petals, porcini mushrooms, and wild strawberries emerge on the nose, as the wine spends time in the glass, alternating with red licorice, white tobacco, damson plums, and cocoa powder. On the palate, the wine is sleek and precise, with persistent dark red fruit flavors that echo the nose, adding suggestions of rhubarb, red currants, clove, and dried orange peel. Superfine tannins carry the flavors through a clean and seemingly endless finish. About this wine producer: If there is any Barolo producer who perfectly embodies the idea of stewardship of his heritage, it is Elio Grasso. He was working in a bank in Torino in 1978 when his grandfather died, leaving him a small cascina and a few giornate of vines on the Gavarini and Ginestra hills of Monforte d’Alba. Elio promptly quit the bank to become a wine grower. Today he still works every day in the vineyard, preferring to leave the cellar and business to his son Gianluca, who produces the wines. The estate is now always counted among the top producers in Italy.
