Serge Martin-Pierrat currently heads up Chateau des Hospitaliers, his family’s farm in the commune of Saint-Christol in the Languedoc – northeast of Montpellier – west of Nîmes. Like his father before him, who purchased the farm in 1978, Serge farms apples, peaches, and of course, grapes for the production of delicious white and red wine. The traditional encépagement of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, and Mourvèdre (red wines), Roussanne, Rolle (Vermentino), and Grenache Blanc (white wines), are planted with care, and respect for the land. Serge leaves the wild ground cover in the vineyards (and orchards) to maintain a diverse eco-system that he feels is the most efficient way to ward off pests. It seems to bring sunny, floral scents to all of his wines as well.
