As reported in September, we plan on more Special Offerings going forward: of carefully selected, indisputably iconic Bordeaux in historic classic vintages, each of which had never before left the Château at which it was bottled until it was picked up there in a refrigerated truck, and was shipped in the same refrigerated containers that bring us every wine we offer at Moore Brothers.
No more perfect provenance is possible.
The idea came to me on a ten-day visit to Bordeaux with my friend Pierre Paillardon, the superstar sommelier who introduced me to some of our most important core suppliers almost thirty years ago. Not surprisingly, the wines of the outstanding Bordeaux producers he and I met in April 2013 took Moore Brothers by storm: Château Reverdi in Listrac, Château Sipian in the Médoc, Château Haut Rocher in Saint Émilion, and Château Tournefeuille in Lalande de Pomerol, not to mention Châteaux Brûlesécaille and Martinat in the Côtes de Bourg.
Even so, I felt wistful as we looked down on the vineyards of Pétrus and Lafleur from the terraces above Tournefeuille, and even more so when we drove down the Médoc along the D2 past Lynch Bages and Lafite, remembering the magnificent wines I opened every day when I was the sommelier at Le Bec-Fin in Philadelphia. Which led me to ask Pierre if any of his long relationships with the biggest players in Bordeaux might open a cellar or two for a small direct purchase.
You might find the wine elsewhere for less, but then you’d always wonder when, and under what conditions it had been transported from the Château, not to mention how many different places it has been since then.
Only 216 bottles are available, every one shipped directly from the Château. (97 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate).
