visiting winegrower – provence!
By
Alexis Rousset-Rouard is coming by for the weekend all the way from Menerbes in Provence!
In our New York store, we’ll start at 6 PM, and go to closing, Friday, April 25
and in our New Jersey store, we’ll go from 12 PM to 5 PM, on Saturday April 26.
Alexis is going to miss the Delaware store, as he’s flying out on Sunday, so if you’re a Delaware customer, drop by New Jersey on Saturday.
We’ll be pouring a whole lot of Domaine de la Citadelle wines, including the drop-dead, delicious Cuvée le Chataignier Rosé, which I know I harp on a lot, but really if you’ve not yet had real Provençal rosé, this is a great place to start. There’l be some great reds as well!
Come on out and grab a taste of Provence!
Hi Dave,
In keeping with European tradition, we use the word “winegrower.” If you’ve not yet seen what Paolo De Marchi has to say on this subject in the little clip on this page, you’ll understand better why this is.
You can also see what Francois Barmes (Alsace) has to say on the subject of wine on this page.
I also re-enforce our own feelings about the subject in a posting about the Clos Baudoin (see the last couple paragraphs).
Wine isn’t “made,” it’s grown in the vineyard. If the produce of the vineyard’s no good, there’s nothing a “winemaker” can do that’s gonna transform it into good wine.
I do, however, have to remind myself, linguistically (and often), to use the word “winegrower.” It helps to keep my thoughts about wine clear. This whole discussion could lead to larger things – a conversation, perhaps with Joe, perhaps with a couple of beers knocked back in a loud tavern where our arguments would just become part of the louder din.

What is the origin of the term winegrower? Is winemaker incorrect?
