François Barmès of Domaine Barmès-Buecher in Alsace introduced us to Weingut Weegmüller in Neustadt-Haardt, a 37 acre estate now run in the twelfth generation by Stefanie Weegmüller (above) and her husband Richard Scherr.

“Steffi” and her husband farm the best vineyards in the area, including the Herrenletten, Bürgergarten, and Manderling in Haardt, and the Eselshaut in Mussbach; vineyards familiar to German wine lovers who know are familiar with the Pfalz.

Stephanie’s tasting room seems to be an unofficial meeting place for German wine insiders, including winemakers like Klaus Peter Keller (Steffi sent me with flowers from her garden to take to the Kellers when I left the last time I visited), and Hans-Günter Schwarz, who is the “godfather” of winemaking in Neustadt, and a mentor to Stefanie. He was there when we visited the first time, along with Albert de Jong, a Dutch journalist who specializes in the wines of Germany and Austria. Stuart Pigott, author of Life Beyond Liebfraumilch, and The Wine Atlas of Germany (widely regarded to be the world’s foremost authority on German wine), is a family friend. Every one of them has told us that Stefanie Weegmüller may be the most talented winemaker in Germany.
