south philly friendliness

When Nicole and I returned from our trip to New Orleans we had nothing in the fridge. We were so hungry, and without food in the house, we decided to go out to eat.

Initially, we were stumped and then it hit us: L’Angolo is right around the corner, and we had never been – what a perfect opportunity to check out the restaurant. We walked in on a Sunday, without a reservation, and the kitchen was closing. Boy, did we feel rude. We apologized to the chef, and told him we’d return. As we were leaving, the gentleman that was running the floor stopped us, cleared a table, and accommodated us. I love neighborhood friendliness!

Walking into L’Angolo feels like a trip to the old world. The back wall has a nice mural and the color scheme reminds me of a restaurant dining room in Italy. The food also takes you back to Italy – the south of Italy. We’d brought a bottle of 2006 Domaine de la Citadelle Rosé, and if I do say so myself it was a perfect match to all the food. The wine was singing beautifully that night, with hints of spice and floral notes wrapped around elegant red fruit notes. We started with the Antipasto plate, the white beans and fire-roased bell peppers are to die for. We then dove into Spaghetti Bolognese and Spaghetti allo Scoglio – a pasta dish with shrimp, mussels, and clams, brightened with a hint of parsley in a white sauce and we finished up with the Veal and mushrooms.

My favorite part of the evening (the food and company aside) was the great treatment from the staff. I try not to walk in places without reservations and I do not like walking in when the staff is trying to go home. So, this is a big THANK YOU to the staff and chef at L’Angolo’s.
