shiao lan kung

I’ll come right out and admit that I’m borrowing this photo from findingphilly.com, as I never seem to have a camera with me when we go out to eat.

Susan and I had a wonderful Sunday, out and about, running errands, and catching the latest Ang Lee film (which, if nothing else, is an experience), and somehow wound up with a hankerin’ for Cantonese.

Shiao lan Kung is a perfect place to experience “real” Cantonese cooking in Philadelphia. It is one ugly dining room, brightly lit, and almost always crowded with locals and families doing multi-course dinners. We were just happy to get a seat without too long a wait – ugly dining room or not. The food’s worth the trip.

Armed with a bottle of Von Heddesdorff’s Riesling halbtrocken 2006, I ordered a favorite, the salt-baked, mixed seafood dish, that I knew would be a perfect foil for the wine. Susan’s Moo Shoo pork did just fine with the wine as well.

I like this restaurant. The door to the kitchen bangs open, and the view is filled with a busy staff huddled around steaming pots. There’s always a lot of commotion, and a lot of happy diners. It just feels “authentic.”
