sergio germano and truly great barolo

By David Moore

Susan and I just finished up a wonderful meal of slow-cooked short ribs, washed down with an extraordinary bottle of Barolo Prapo 2004 from Sergio Germano.

It brought to mind a visit we made with Sergio to an extraordinary vineyard called Herzu within the Dogliani region where Sergio Germano grows riesling, pinot noir, and chardonnay. Here he grows wine under the DOC, “Alta Langhe” – glorious, dry riesling, and sparkling wines, in tiny amounts.

We spent an hour here with Sergio, talking about soil types, “typicity,” and a host of other subjects, and happened to capture this little piece from Sergio that sums up why his Barolo is so “complete.”
