on “old vines” in champagne
By
This kid (Raphael Bereche) is amazing. He’s like, 27 years-old, and manages his family’s estate in Champagne. We often pour his wine in our classes in the New York Store as an example of how real, authentic Champagne should taste (usually in contrast to the famous “Yellow Label” that’s the usual “social currency” in Manhattan.
Anyway, here’s a clip from Raphael talking about how he’s managing his vineyards. He’s very concerned that in the rush to “keep up,” many of the vineyards in Champagne are being planted to productive “clones” of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay at the expense of the distinct, and diverse “old” plantings.
