champagne dosage trois gilles mansard

Wine
Like most small “grower Champagne” houses, the 24-hectare holdings of Gilles Mansard include 66 distinct parcels, many of which were planted by Mansard’s grandfather in 1930. The core of this wine comes from oldest (84 years-old) vineyards with selections made from a number of other small parcels to achieve a classic Champagne blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay.

The wines were barrel fermented before undergoing the traditional second fermentation in bottle. This Champagne qualifies as “extra brut,” but shows […]

sonoma coast pinot noir nichols wine company

Wine
The Nichols Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is a blend of grapes from five vineyards located in the Sonoma Coast AVA. Each vineyard is strongly influenced by the cooling Pacific breezes, and the mix of soils adds mineral complexity to the wine. This plantings are a mix of classic California Pinot Noir clones and “Dijon” clones that thrive in this region.

On the nose, the wine shows a forward edge of warm, brown spice, and subtle, rich oak. As the wine opens, rich red fruit aromas […]

côtes du rhône villages khazan mas de libian

Wine
Jean-Pierre Thibon’s family has operated the Mas de Libian in Saint-Marcel d’Ardèche since 1670. He and his cardiologist wife Jacqueline have three daughters: Hélène, Catherine, and Cécile. In 1995, Hélène Thibon and her husband Alain Macagno assumed responsibility for viticulture and winemaking, and began to estate-bottle the wine, rather than sell it in bulk to négociants. In 2005 the Thibons adopted the demanding discipline of biodynamics.

The terrifically difficult Spring of 2013 resulted in a huge loss during bud break and […]

amarone della valpolicella classico agricola ca’ la bionda

Wine
The Castellani family tend three adjacent vineyard plots on slopes of the prime Marano Valley planted to Corvina, Corvinone (a related clone), and Rondinella. Corvina, the soul of Valpolicella, yields a spicy, berry fruited wine of medium tannins. Rondinella is the local “salt and pepper” grape. The subtle differences in the makeup of the plots and age of the vines afford winemaker Alessandro the opportunity to distinctly expressive Valpolicelle as well as the famed, robust Amarone and a semi-sweet Recioto […]

sancerre rouge domaine dominique et janine crochet

Wine
Dominique and Janine Crochet established their estate in 1992, starting with just a few hectares of perfectly situated hillside vineyards in Bué. Today the domaine extends over fifteen hectares in more than forty tiny parcels, and is one of the leading estates in Sancerre. But I would never have known of Crochet, were it not for the generosity of Dominique Roger. Like twenty-three-year-old Teddy Crochet, who is now at the helm of the one of the finest estates in Sancerre, […]
