blackbird in collingswood

It was late, and Susan and I had just opened a bottle of Clos Baudoin 1989…and we were hungry.

There aren’t a lot of restaurants I’d trust with this wine, but Alex Capasso’s Blackbird in Collingswood seemed like a good bet.

Susan started with Thai Chicken Spring Rolls, and I had Scallop seared with a light Lobster Sauce to start. For the main course, Susan had a Scallop dish, and I had a smokin’ filet of Halibut with Chinese Eggplant and Ginger Sauce.

The wine was perfect with just about everything – particularly the Scallops and Halibut dishes, proving (once again) that “sweet” wines can often be very versatile.

la viola and uvaggio

sperino uvaggio

To celebrate my wife’s birthday, we took a bottle of Paolo DeMarchi’s beautiful Proprieta Sperino Uvaggio to La Viola on 16th Street in Philly. Susan had suggested this as a “nice, romantic” setting for a birthday celebration. Hmmm…I liked the food, but apparently a Saturday evening is anything but romantic at this very busy, wonderful, little restaurant.

The Uvaggio (DOC Coste della Sesia is one of those wines that hadn’t made it home just yet, even though I love the wine – Susan and I try to “cook light” at home. So, Susan hadn’t had the wine yet, and La Viola is the perfect BYO for this wine. It was particularly good with the roasted pepper appetizer, and the Vitello Alla Viola.

great, classic riesling and another night at sagami

sushi at sagami

Not to “rub it in,” but New York has nothing on our two, South Jersey sushi “stars,” Fuji and Sagami. If the fish were any fresher, we’d be swimming with ‘em.

It’s been a busy week, so Susan and I headed to Sagami with a bottle of Kanzemer Altenberg Spätlese from our friend Johann Peter Reinert.

For those of you who don’t know, the Altenberg is recognized as one of the outstanding sources for great wine in the world – akin to Combette in Puligny-Montrachet – a Premier Cru (at least) in quality, and “Peter’s” farming does it justice

So the Sushi’s always good at Sagami – ’nuff said – but this wine…hoo-boy!

A classic fructig wine – there’s a touch of sweetness – but godferdammer, the wine is achingly balanced and delicious with raw fish. The wine’s also low in alcohol (8%), so you don’t feel like a bus hit you should you…well, you know…finish the bottle, which we did last night.

Delicious! And if you were to look for wine of comparable quality (independent of personal “preference”) in Burgundy, you’d pay a whole lot more…and it wouldn’t be as good with the sushi.

if you happen to visit san casciano, go here!

butchers logo

So, Susan and I were walking around the little “city” of San Casciano Val di Pesa doing some food shopping, when we tripped over this little gem of a shop.

Enrico Casini’s father set up shop here in 1950, and it’s a bright, lovely “Old World” butcher shop. Enrico is hugely enthusiastic, and spoke to us at length (in Italian) telling us all about the naturally raised chickens and pigs he buys, while demonstrating his skills with a knife.

It was a shame, he said (at least I think he said), that his daughter wasn’t in the shop at that time – she is carrying on the business and speaks English fluently.

The language issue was no problem – his enthusiasm (and his produce) spoke for itself.

We took home a large breast of chicken which I cooked up with some slow cooked tomatoes and fresh lavender, rosemary, and sage from the front yard (more on this later – WHAT A PLACE!).

We washed down this wonderful dish with a bottle of Corzano e Paterno Chianti, relaxed, and went out to watch the stars rise over the hills.

vinsans ricard

Susan picked up some lean, grass-fed beef at the Haddonfield Farmer’s Market, and wanted burgers on-the-grill with roquefort. It sounded like a plan, and I started thinking about the wine…

One of the staff happened to ask what we doing for dinner, and jumped up and down over the Vinsans Ricard, as a perfect pairing (apparently just about everyone on the staff had had this but me).

This was off-the-charts delicious. The only problem is, it’s too easy to drink, and we wound up finishing the bottle in about 45 minutes (!). Also, Vincent Ricard didn’t make much, so we don’t have much. If you see it in one of our stores, jump all over it. Maybe next year Vincent will bottle a little more…
