great, classic riesling and another night at sagami

sushi at sagami

Not to “rub it in,” but New York has nothing on our two, South Jersey sushi “stars,” Fuji and Sagami. If the fish were any fresher, we’d be swimming with ‘em.

It’s been a busy week, so Susan and I headed to Sagami with a bottle of Kanzemer Altenberg Spätlese from our friend Johann Peter Reinert.

For those of you who don’t know, the Altenberg is recognized as one of the outstanding sources for great wine in the world – akin to Combette in Puligny-Montrachet – a Premier Cru (at least) in quality, and “Peter’s” farming does it justice

So the Sushi’s always good at Sagami – ’nuff said – but this wine…hoo-boy!

A classic fructig wine – there’s a touch of sweetness – but godferdammer, the wine is achingly balanced and delicious with raw fish. The wine’s also low in alcohol (8%), so you don’t feel like a bus hit you should you…well, you know…finish the bottle, which we did last night.

Delicious! And if you were to look for wine of comparable quality (independent of personal “preference”) in Burgundy, you’d pay a whole lot more…and it wouldn’t be as good with the sushi.

Nunzio in Collingswood tuna

Susan and I stopped by Nunzio’s in Collingswood last night for a “quick bite” on the way home. Nunzio sent out this little dish to get us started – Tuna, crusted with peppercorns, and just seared…with some balsamic drizzled over. What a great little dish!

We also had Nunzio’s “signature” carpaccio, and a whole roast “Orata,” or sea bass, drizzled with olive oil and lemon.

We drank the latest release (2007) of “Joschi’s” delicious, Corzanello Bianco – a wine we drank almost every day while staying at Corzano e Paterno a few weeks back. Not only is the wine wonderful, but it reminded us of a drop dead, beautiful time in Tuscany.

joe pesce ‘n rosé

byob header

Susan had a tough week “on the road,” and I’ve been crazy here as well, so rather than cook last night, we took a trip down the road to Collingswood, South Jersey’s BYOB heaven.

I’d heard about Joe Pesce (the restaurant, not the actor), but any time we’ve walked by the place was slammed (it a relative “new kid on the block,” and it takes a while for the excitement to wear off…Collingswood’s a small town). Last night, we were able to snag a table, and can report the place is a welcome addition.

Susan won’t be able to meet Alexis Rousset-Rouard while he’s in town, so I brought his delicious rosé to pair with the “Italian” seafood specialties of the restaurant.

It was all delicious together, but there was one “appetizer” that was particularly good in a kind of whacky way (I’d just never heard of something like this…whacky’s sometimes relative); a half-head of romaine lettuce, grilled (!), topped with a bunch of grilled seafood bits, and drizzled with a kinda-sorta “Ceaser” dressing.

If I had a wood-fired grill, I don’t know that I’d eat anything else…it’s a wonderful preparation.

Yet another great evening of delicious Mediterranean wine with Mediterranean food!

fuji logoFirst, an apology for reminding our New York customers that the Philadelphia area has something you don’t – boatloads of really good BYOB restaurants. With rare exception, I frequent these restaurants exclusively.

At most “licensed” restaurants, the wine rarely has anything to do with the food (a HUGE problem these days what with all the newly-minted “somellier wannabes” packing the wine lists with the “hippest” collections of “cult” wines, and “luxury brand” bottlings), and, the wines in restaurants rarely escape damage from the standard wine distribution model (transportation from the winery without the benefit of temperature-control). Sorry – off on a tangent there…

Last night, after a hard, busy week, Susan and I headed over to Fuji, in our little hometown of Haddonfield. The joint was rockin’, and we had a little wait before getting seated. One noisy table included an old buddy who was celebrating his birthday – we were seated next to him, and the evening was tremendously entertaining.

While Chef Matt Ito’s selection of sushi and sashimi was outstanding, the star of the meal, was the bottle of Ratzenberger’s Steeger St. Jost Großes Gewächs 2005. I had one bottle left from our Christmas “real” food extravaganza, and good as it was with the “heritage” turkey then, with the sweet, raw fish last night, the wine was ethereal.
