apamate – oh yeah!
By
Sheesh! Susan and I have been so busy we haven’t had a chance to catch up to the “blog.”
A while back I posted suggestions from our staff for BYOBs in Philly, and recommended wines to take with you. It’s become a resource for me, ’cause I can never keep the names of these restaurants in my head.
Last Friday, we took in apamate (lowercase), an outrageously good “Basque” restaurant on the 1600 block of South Street. I took the wrong wine, but it didn’t matter – the food was wonderful, and so were the people.
Next time, I’m chillin’ a bottle of manzanilla to pair with this wonderful food!
Hi David! thank you for the nice mention and I am honor you thought so high of us. On another note, we do have nice glasses for people with wines like yours that would like to drink it in proper wine glasses. We wanted to keep the low-key rustic Spanish theme but also wanted to offer the other option. Next time ask your server! (who should have offer!) thank you again! How about an albarinho or a Rivera del Duero (not a big fan of manzanilla) I will come in soon to get me some ; ) a pleasure meeting you and thank you for coming in and posting your experience on your blog!
Well, really the wine was fine, but the problem is the place doesn’t have wine glasses as such. Small tumblers are all they have, so we couldn’t smell the Custoza, and that’s half the wine, right there.
However, Manzanilla will work perfectly with the food, and just fine with the tumblers.

Or perhaps a nice Basque Txakolina ;-)
Curious about your bad pairing though…
